It will look at who the main actors were in the creation of this institution, what the institution’s goals were, and what its overall effect was for the following years of its existence. While providing a basic overview of the B.I.A, this lesson plan will go further in depth. Students will build upon prior lessons and analyze primary source documents that reveal the B.I.A’s intention of coercing the Native American population into eradicating aspects of their culture.</text>

<text>This lesson plan has the purpose of introducing what the Indian Removal Act of 1830 was. It will look at what this legislation specifically said, the context of the time that it was passed, who it affected the most, and what the overall general outcome of this Act was. Already having a sense of the relationship between the U.S. Government and the Native Americans, students in this lesson will analyze a specific, but very significant example of this relationship, and gain a better understanding of the narrative of this relationship and the power dynamic that was created out of the U.S. government using legislation to negatively impact the lives of Native Americans across the United States.</text>

<text>Students up to this point in the unit have gained an understanding of the early relationship between the Native Americans and the U.S. Government. They have been exposed to various primary source documents relating to the impending removal of Native American tribes from their ancestral lands, and they have heard voices from both sides regarding the reasoning and the questioning behind these new platforms and policies. With this lesson, students will go beyond the opinions and voices and look extensively at the effects and the changes in lives of Native Americans. Students will now be exposed to the direct results of the Indian Removal Act and the unjust and inhumane treatment of the Native Americans through an in-depth analysis of the Trail of Tears.</text>
