In this lesson, students will be introduced to the discrepancy between the Native American history presented in U.S. History textbooks and the reality of Native American existence, as textbooks often exclude Native Americans from more modern contexts (post-1900), making it appear that Native Americans no longer exist. By analyzing their history textbooks and researching Native Americans today, students will have the opportunity to observe this discrepancy firsthand and then be able to engage in conversation about why this discrepancy exists. Students should end the lesson understanding that even though Native Americans are often excluded from history textbooks, they still exist and have a rich history and culture.
